Detective testifies about Jackson doc's money woes

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A police detective who investigated Michael Jackson's doctor says he found massive evidence the physician was in dire financial straits, and he believed the doctor would do whatever necessary to get paid.

Detective Orlando Martinez told jurors hearing a negligence case filed by Jackson's mother that former cardiologist Conrad Murray was more than $500,000 in debt when Jackson died.

Murray was expecting a $150,000 a month paycheck to serve as Jackson's tour doctor, but the singer died before the contract was finalized.

Jackson's mother is suing concert giant AEG Live, claiming it failed to properly investigate Murray or his finances.

Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter after Jackson died of an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

AEG has denied wrongdoing.

The affidavit says an FBI surveillance team saw James Everett Dutschke remove several items from the studio in Tupelo, Miss., on April 22 and dump them in a trash bin about 100 yards down the street. The items included a dust mask that later tested positive for ricin, the affidavit said.

Traces of ricin also were found in the studio, and Dutschke used the Internet to buy castor beans (from which ricin is derived), the affidavit said.

Annette Dobbs, who owns the small shopping center where the studio was located, said authorities padlocked the studio door during the search. She said Tuesday that FBI agents haven't told her anything, including whether the building poses a health threat. Inside the studio is one large room with a smaller reception area and a concrete floor. Police tape covered the front and the small back door.

Dutschke, 41, was arrested Saturday by FBI agents at his home in Tupelo, and is being held without bond pending a preliminary and detention hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Oxford.

The FBI searched his home, vehicles and studio last week, often while wearing hazardous materials suits. Attention turned to Dutschke after prosecutors dropped charges against an Elvis impersonator who says he had feuded with Dutschke in the past.

Dutschke told The Associated Press last week that he didn't send the letters. His lawyer, federal public defender George Lucas, had no comment Tuesday about the information in the affidavit.

Dutschke was arrested as part of the investigation into poison-tainted letters sent to Obama, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Lee County, Miss., Judge Sadie Holland.

The affidavit said numerous documents found in Dutschke's home had "trashmarks" that were similar to ones on the letters sent to the officials.

"Trashmarks are flaws or marks that come from dirt, scratches, or other marks on the printer. They are transferred to each piece of paper that is run through the printer," it said.

It also describes text messages allegedly sent between two phones subscribed to Dutschke's wife, including one on April 20 that said "get a fire going" and "we're coming over to burn some things."

The FBI has not yet revealed details about how lethal the ricin was. A Senate official has said the ricin was not weaponized, meaning it wasn't in a form that could easily enter the body. If inhaled, ricin can cause respiratory failure, among other symptoms. No antidote exists.

The most notable case of ricin poisoning was in 1978, when a Bulgarian dissident was lethally injected with it by an operative of that country's secret service.

Dutschke also bought 50 castor beans off eBay in November 2012 and 50 more in December 2012, the affidavit said.

Sunken Egyptian city reveals 1,200-year-old secrets

Until a decade ago, no one knew if Heracleion, believed to be an ancient harbor city, was fiction or real. Now, reports the Telegraph, the researchers who found it?150 feet beneath the surface of Egypt's Bay of Aboukir?are sharing some of the amazing historical artifacts preserved there.

The finds include 64 ships, 16-foot-tall statues, 700 anchors and countless gold coins and smaller artifacts.

According to underwater archeologist Franck Goddio, credited with having discovered the site, the city was probably built sometime around the 8^th century B.C., which makes it older than the famed city of Alexandria. Over the years, it fell victim to a number of natural disasters before being swallowed by the sea, probably around A.D. 700.

?We are just at the beginning of our research,? said Goddio. ?We will probably have to continue working for the next 200 years for [it] to be fully revealed and understood.?

It's believed that gradual soil erosion eventually caused Heracleion to fall into the Mediterranean. ?It is now clear that a slow movement of subsidence of the soil affected this part of the south-eastern basin of the Mediterranean,? Goddio writes on his site. ?The rise in sea level?already observed in antiquity?also contributed significantly to the submergence of the land.?

The Telegraph reports that researchers are beginning to more fully understand what daily life was like in the city, also called ?Thonis.? Mainly, they describe it as having served as the main hub for sea traffic entering the region, including all trade from Greece.

?We are getting a rich picture of things like the trade that was going on there and the nature of the maritime economy in the Egyptian late period,? Damian Robinson, director of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford, told the Telegraph. Robinson is part of the team that has been busy uncovering artifacts from Heracleion's sunken remains.

?It was the major international trading port for Egypt at this time,? Robinson added. ?It is where taxation was taken on import and export duties. All of this was run by the main temple.?

The city is also believed to have had a rich cultural history. Helen was said to have visited it with her lover Paris shortly before the onset of the Trojan War.

Fiat reports 83 million euro 1Q loss

MILAN (AP) ? Italian carmaker Fiat SpA reported a first-quarter loss of 83 million euros ($108 million) as European sales and profits at is U.S. partner Chrysler tumbled.

The loss posted Monday by the automaker, based in the northern Italian city of Turin, compares with a restated first-quarter profit of 35 million euros last year.

Revenues were down 2 percent to 19.75 billion euros, as performance in Latin America, Asia and its premium brands helped to compensate for declines in North America and Europe. Revenues were down 3 percent to 10 billion euros in North America and 4 percent to 4.4 billion euros in Europe.

Chrysler first-quarter profits dropped 65 percent as shipments of cars and trucks were down in preparation for new vehicle launches. Fiat's European operations lost 157 million euros.

Italy's new government begins life in climate of crisis

ROME (Reuters) - New Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta seeks the backing of parliament in a confidence vote on Monday, facing severe political and economic problems that will test the solidity of his broad coalition government in the months ahead.

Letta is due to speak in parliament at 3 p.m. (9:00 a.m. EDT) before the lower house confidence vote in the evening, where he will be backed by his center-left Democratic Party and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right People of Freedom.

A Senate confidence vote will follow, probably on Tuesday.

Sunday's swearing in of Letta's cabinet was overshadowed by the shooting of two policemen outside the prime minister's office in Rome. Nevertheless, financial market reaction to the end of months of political stalemate was positive with bond yields falling and shares rising.

Italy's cost of borrowing dropped to its lowest level since October 2010 at an auction of medium and long term bonds on Monday.

Letta was pushed into a coalition with Berlusconi after the center-left fell short of a viable parliamentary majority in elections in February. He now faces a battle to maintain the unity of his government while passing unpopular reforms.

Berlusconi, who is fighting legal battles over a tax fraud conviction and charges of paying for sex with a minor, will not be in the cabinet himself but many people on the left find the idea of working with his center-right party abhorrent.

In an interview on his own Canale 5 television station, Berlusconi said he hoped the left could undergo some "self criticism" and learn from working with his party. He expected the government to last long enough to pass some vital reforms.

Berlusconi demands the scrapping of an unpopular housing tax and reimbursement of last year's contributions, a measure which would blow an eight billion euro hole in the 2013 budget. He also wants tax breaks for companies hiring young people.

It is not yet clear how Letta will handle this demand.

Berlusconi, whose last government was forced from office at the height of the euro zone debt crisis in late 2011, said he expected to play a leading part in shaping policy.

"As I am the president of the People of Freedom our representatives in the government will have continuous contact with our movement and with me," he said.

"THE TRIGGER"

On Sunday an unemployed man shot and wounded two police officers and a passer-by just as the cabinet was being sworn in at the presidential palace about a kilometer (half a mile) away.

Officials said the shooting, which the gunman said was originally intended as an attack on politicians, was an isolated incident but it was widely interpreted as a further alarming sign of public anger with lawmakers.

Italy's economy has been sluggish for over a decade with gross domestic product now lower than it was in 2001, companies stifled by high taxes and red tape and youth unemployment in some areas as high as 40 percent.

All this has fed into public bitterness directed at politicians, several of whom have been jostled or harassed by angry crowds recently.

Letta's cabinet, which includes a record seven women and Italy's first black minister, was shaped partly in response to disillusionment with political elites shown by the success of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement in the last election.

But the party, whose fiery leader Beppe Grillo has built the 5-Star movement into the third biggest force in parliament by attacking traditional political elites, was singled out on Monday for criticism by his enemies.

The right wing daily Il Giornale, owned by the Berlusconi family - one of Grillo's favorite targets - carried the frontpage headline "Il Grilletto" (The Trigger).

Letta has promised to address the social effects of the crisis and push the European Union away from its fixation with budget austerity and towards economic growth and investment.

With some doubt over whether his government will last a full five-year term, he is expected to try to pass at least a few basic reforms quickly including a change to Italy's much criticized electoral laws and a cut in the size of parliament.

Despite Monday's positive market response, there have also been notes of caution. "The real tests will come in the next few weeks and months," said Lorenzo Stanca, managing partner of Mandarin Capital, a private equity fund that invests in small Italian and Chinese firms. "There is not much experience in Italy of a coalition government and it will be difficult."
