Sympathy for US school shooting stretches globe

BANGKOK (AP) ? Leaders of two of the closest longtime allies of the United States have been quick to express sympathy over a shooting rampage that left 26 people dead, including 20 children, at a Connecticut elementary school.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement Saturday that her country shares America's shock at what she called "this senseless and incomprehensible act of evil."

She said that Australians, as parents as well as friends of the American people, mourned the loss of young children and teachers who were murdered in a place of learning.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said that he was "shocked and deeply saddened" to hear of the shootings and that he found it "heartbreaking" to think of those who lost such young children.

Long-term anabolic-androgenic steroid use may impact visuospatial memory

Dec. 14, 2012 ? The long-term use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) may severely impact the user's ability to accurately recall the shapes and spatial relationships of objects, according to a recent study conducted by McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School investigators.

In the study, published December 14 online in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, McLean Hospital Research Psychiatrist Harrison Pope, MD, used a variety of tests to determine whether AAS users developed cognitive defects due to their admitted history of abuse.

"Our work clearly shows that while some areas of brain function appear to be unaffected by the use of AAS, users performed significantly worse on the visuospatial tests that were administered. Those deficits directly corresponded to their length of use of anabolic-androgenic steroids," explained Pope. "Impaired visuospatial memory means that a person might have difficulty, for example, in remembering how to find a location, such as an address on a street or a room in a building."

The study looked at 44 individuals whose ages ranged from 29-55, with 31 having used AAS for an average of seven years. Each participant was asked to complete five cognitive tests that assessed a wide range of brain functions, including memory for shapes and locations of objects, memory for lists of words, reaction time, ability to maintain attention, and speed of information processing .

Pope and his colleagues discovered that those participants who were long-term AAS users did significantly worse than nonusers on a test called "Pattern Recognition Memory," where participants are asked to try to remember a collection of patterns that they have been presented on a computer screen. The scores on this test declined noticeably with increasing lifetime AAS dose. These results remained stable in sensitivity analyses addressing potential confounding factors, indicating that the findings were unlikely to be attributable to some factor other than AAS use.

Pope explained, "We have seen a significant rise in AAS use within the general population over the last 20 years, and are finding that people are taking doses that are often 10 times stronger than those typically used in the 1960s and 70s. We are worried that with higher doses of AAS and longer periods of lifetime exposure, some people might even eventually develop visuospatial deficits similar to those sometimes seen in elderly people with dementia, who can become easily become lost or disoriented. "

According to Pope, science still knows very little about the very long-term effects of AAS abuse, so few in fact that the McLean team did not know if they would even find that the extended use of AAS resulted in any cognitive defects. "The magnitude of our findings was quite shocking and we hope that they will lead to larger studies and increased awareness regarding the possible dangers of the use and abuse of AAS," said Pope.

The best company to work for is...

1 hr.

Where are employees most satisfied in their jobs? Beer tasters at Sam Adams? Photographers at Playboy? Shoppers for Saks? Mickey at Disneyland?

No.

The happiest employees on Earth work at?Facebook.

That's according to Glassdoor.com, the website where employees rate their own companies. For the second time in three years, Facebook has come out on top, with a 4.7 rating on a scale of one to five, meaning workers are generally "very satisfied."

Satisfied despite?the bashing the company has taken?both in the media and the stock market since the IPO.

"Wall Street dared to doubt Facebook, and Zuckerberg has turned it into an internal rallying cry," said Glassdoor co-founder and CEO Robert Hohman. "People have more faith in him than they did a year ago."

Hohman says?Zuckerberg's approval rating?has grown from 90 percent in 2011 to 99 percent now, putting him in a rare club that once included Steve Jobs.

Glassdoor came up with this year's list after combing through nearly a half million anonymous employee reviews of companies on its website (or alleged employees, as?Glassdoor works on the honor system).

Facebook workers?praised the company for its fun culture, and they clearly trust founder Mark Zuckerberg. One project manager wrote about enjoying the "ability to work on a product that affects hundreds of millions of people," and "employees are given large responsibilities relatively early in their careers."

Coming in second for The Best Place to Work in 2013 is?McKinsey & Co., followed by?Riverbed Technology,?Bain & Co.?(falling from #1 last year) and?MD Anderson Cancer Center.?Both Riverbed and MD Anderson are new to the list, as is?In-N-Out Burger, which debuted at #9 with a 4.2 rating.

At the very bottom of the top 50 list is?Starbucks, with a 3.8 rating, still well into satisfied territory. However, last year Starbucks ranked #34, a space now taken over by?Apple, which has tumbled 24 spots from 10th place in a single year.

Boy, when employees at Apple and Starbucks have lost enthusiasm, the Mayans really are onto something.

(Read More:?What Wall Street Wants From Mark Zuckerberg)

"It's getting harder for customer service and retail companies to do well on this list," said Hohman. Apple's rating hasn't changed in a year, it's stayed steady at 3.9, but so many other companies have moved ahead.

Which companies didn't make the list at all? In the tech sector, the lowest-rated, well-known companies include?Groupon,?HP?and?Netflix.

Yahoo?is actually beginning to move up, with a 3.3 rating, and new CEO Marissa Mayer has an 86 percent approval rating.

There are some traditional American industries that were ranked well by workers. Companies which have made the list since it started in 2009 include?Chevron?(#13) and?General Mills?(#35). Who knew working for Big Oil and Big Food could be Big Fun? Glassdoor cites the work/life balance benefits at both companies, even if shares of both have underperformed the market this year.

Underperformance also hasn't stopped employees from "liking" Facebook.

So can we stop poking fun at the social networking monolith, considering the folks there are probably happier than most of us? Potentially richer, too? Plus they get to wear jeans and hoodies to work? I mean, does anyone at Facebook have anything bad to say about it?

(Read More:?Facebook Will Disappear in 5 to 8 Years: Analyst)

Actually, yes.

Someone identifying him/herself as a Facebook Product Engineer wrote on Glassdoor, "It can be very stressful. You have to get used to all the media attention and mudslinging."

No. 1 Indiana gets stronger with 2 freshmen back

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? No. 1 Indiana, which has been playing short-handed all season, is getting reinforcements.

On Saturday, 6-foot-8 forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea and 7-foot center Peter Jurkin are expected to make their college debuts after completing an NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension. All the Hoosiers have to do now is figure out how to work the two freshmen into the lineup against in-state rival Butler.

"I think it's going to be sort of a game feel," Indiana associate head coach Steve McClain said. "I think coach (Tom Crean) has an idea in his mind of how he wants to do this."

He's just not saying what it is.

It's not as if the Hoosiers (9-0) need more help. They lead the nation in scoring (89.1 points) and victory margin (plus-31.7). They are fourth nationally in rebound differential (plus-13.8) and field-goal percentage (51.5). They even lead the Big Ten in defensive field-goal percentage (35.3) and defensive 3-point percentage (26.4) and have won every game by double digits.

Still, things were starting to get thin on the front line.

Derek Elston, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, had surgery Oct. 26 for a torn meniscus in his left knee and though his recovery is going well, he isn't expected back until after Christmas. Last week, sophomore forward Austin Etherington went down with a season-ending fractured left kneecap.

So getting the two freshmen back now will help at this weekend's Crossroads Classic, a double-header featuring Indiana's four best-known basketball programs ? the Hoosiers, two-time national runner-up Butler and two more NCAA tourney regulars, No. 22 Notre Dame and Purdue.

Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin were ordered to sit last month by the NCAA, which determined the two had accepted improper benefits from their AAU coach, Mark Adams. He provided them with $9,702 and $6,003 in plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop computer, a cellphone and clothing. Mosquera-Perea was told to pay back approximately $1,590 and Jurkin $250.

The NCAA said both players were qualified to receive the benefits from AHOPE, the nonprofit organization Adams uses to help international players obtain travel documents and cover travel costs to the U.S. The problem was that Adams also was considered an Indiana booster because he donated $185 to the Varsity Club from 1986-92, and boosters cannot provide benefits to players.

Now that they are with the team, it won't be as simple as just plugging Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin into a lineup that revolves around national player of the year candidate Cody Zeller. McClain said it may take a little time to figure it all out.

"Peter is a shot-blocker with length whereas Hanner is a shot-blocker who can step out on the perimeter and guard a perimeter player," McClain said. "They both can rebound on a high level, so they bring a lot to the table."

For the Bulldogs, it's another opportunity to slay a basketball behemoth in front of a national television audience.

Butler (7-2) captivated the nation by becoming the first school in Indiana's storied history to reach back-to-back championship games in 2010 and 2011, and the Bulldogs are up to their old tricks again. The Bulldogs have won four straight, five straight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and have already beaten Marquette, North Carolina and Northwestern as rumors have spread that they may be looking to leave the Atlantic 10 and join a new conference with Marquette and other former Big East schools.

Athletic director Barry Collier declined to comment on those rumors Friday.

One thing Butler hasn't done yet: Beat a No. 1 team. In its only other meetings with the nation's top-ranked team, Butler lost at DePaul in February 1980 and at Michigan during the 1964-65 season.

This time, they'll play Indiana five miles from the Butler campus with a team that has steadily improved.

Butler's game plan revolves around two new hotshot shooters ? Rotnei Clarke, the big-shooting guard who was an All-SEC player at Arkansas, and Kellen Dunham. Plus, 7-foot senior Andrew Smith and power forward Khyle Marshall have been playing better. Smith is coming off a 24-point, 10-rebound game at Northwestern, maybe the best game of his career, and Marshall has become an imposing inside threat.

Coach Brad Stevens nearly had Zeller to go along with that group, but he choose Indiana over Butler and North Carolina.

"They're No. 1 for a reason, they're very deep. I think they've got great skill, great athleticism and a selfless superstar," Stevens said of the Hoosiers. "I think they'll be the team to beat all the way through April."

While the Indiana-Butler game is Saturday's main feature, it's not the only popular attraction in town.

Notre Dame forwards Jack Cooley and Scott Martin will lead No. 22 Notre Dame (8-1) against the young Boilermakers (4-5). These schools, just 108 miles apart, haven't met on the basketball court since the 2004 NIT and the series is tied 20-20.

Martin, once part of a Purdue recruiting class dubbed the Baby Boilers, has downplayed the significance of facing his old school.

"I had some good times and some big wins, so I definitely enjoyed myself there (at Purdue)," Martin said. "Obviously, it didn't work out, and I don't think anyone was too thrilled about the way things happened, but I don't think anyone's bitter about it."

The Boilermakers have struggled this season with three losses already to non-power conference schools ? Bucknell, Xavier and last Saturday at Eastern Michigan 47-44. Their only win against a BCS-conference school came at Clemson.

Inquest: Nurse in British royal hoax found hanging

LONDON (AP) ? A nurse was found hanging in her room three days after she had been duped by a hoax call from Australian DJs about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge, a U.K. inquest was told Thursday. The case is being treated as an apparent suicide.

Coroner's officer Lynda Martindill said nurse Jacintha Saldanha was discovered hanging by a scarf from a wardrobe in her nurses' quarters Friday by a colleague and a member of security staff at London's King Edward VII Hospital.

Martindill said an attempt to revive Saldanha failed.

Police detective chief inspector James Harman said Saldanha, 46, also had injuries to her wrists.

He told the inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court that two notes were found at the scene and another was found among Saldanha's belongings. He said there were no suspicious circumstances, meaning nobody else was involved in Saldanha's death.

Harman said police were examining the notes, interviewing the nurse's friends, family and colleagues and looking at emails and phone calls to establish what led to her death.

He also said detectives would be contacting police in the Australian state of New South Wales to collect "relevant evidence."

Saldanha answered the phone last week when two Australian disc jockeys called seeking information about the former Kate Middleton, who was being treated for severe morning sickness. The DJs impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles, and Saldanha was tricked into transferring the call to another nurse, who revealed private details about the duchess' condition.

The DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, apologized for the prank in emotional interviews on Australian television, saying they never expected their call would be put through. The show was taken off the air and the DJs have been suspended.

Australia's media watchdog, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, said Thursday it was launching an official investigation into whether radio station 2DayFM breached its broadcasting license conditions and the industry code of practice.

In London, coroner Fiona Wilcox opened and adjourned Saldanha's inquest until March 26.

Wilcox expressed "my sympathies to her family and everybody who has been touched by this tragic death."

In Britain, inquests are held to determine the facts whenever someone dies unexpectedly, violently or in disputed circumstances. Inquests do not determine criminal liability or apportion blame.

The local authority, Westminster Council, said Saldanha's body was released to her family after Thursday's hearing.

Saldanha, who was born in India, lived in Bristol in southwestern England with her husband and two teenage children. Her husband, Benedict Barboza, has said she will be laid to rest in Shirva, India.

The family was not in court. Lawmaker Keith Vaz, who has spoken on their behalf, said the nurse's loved ones "need time to grieve."

Vaz said a memorial Mass would be held Saturday at London's Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral.

Easy Things That You Can Do Before Buying a Condo ? Salt Lake ...

Nowadays, condos are selling like hotcakes in the market. Many people are taking advantage of buying a unit because of the practicability and accessibility. Others consider condos to be typically less expensive than similar single family homes in the market. They can either choose one or two bedroom varieties and this type of property can be easily evaluated and can be a great investment. People choose to live in a condo for a variety of reasons. The reason why it?s getting more popular these days because the comfort of living in a condo is far from owning a single family home in town. Location and time are considered by some of city goers and working people.

Here are some simple things you can do when you are looking for the right condo in the market.

Consider the location. When you are searching for the best condo in town, it is always a good start to know where it is really located. If your office of work is near your condo then that would be better because it allows you to save time and walking distance.

Know the different access to certain commercial buildings, offices, and major roads. As far as location is concerned, one thing that you could do when looking for a condo is to know the major roads for access at any time of the day. There should be a commercial building or any establishment that you can rely on whenever you need to buy something.

Your condo unit should have a good security. Remember that you will be having different neighbors for a certain area in the building. Make sure that the building has a security guard or special security features that you can count on and safety first.

Maintenance fee should be reasonable. When you are living in a condo, one advantage is that you will not be obliged to clean the hallways and other areas such as parking lot or the railing on the property since you will be paying for the maintenance fee. Just make sure it is cheaper and reasonable by any means.

The amenities should be available always. Would it be great if the building has a pool, a workout room and a clubhouse? Yes! When you pay for maintenance fee, you can use the amenities available? for a certain building. There will be no extra charges since you pay the maintenance fee and it is just part of living in a condo with luxury.

Know if the price is right. As you examine the unit, the features of the room should be reasonable enough for you to pay for it. Check if all the facilities are functioning properly. Ask for the details.

If you think these things satisfy your need then you can always buy a condo at the end of the day.

How to cope with fear after school shootings

In the aftermath of a Connecticut mass shooting that may rank among the deadliest in U.S. history, many parents are struggling with a visceral fear for their own children, as well as questions about how to explain the horrific school shooting to young kids.

As many as 27 people may be dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., after a gunman (or two, as this hasn't been confirmed) began shooting at around 9:40 a.m. ET this morning, according to news reports. Most of the dead are children, according to ABC News. Officials have identified the suspected gunman, whose brother is reportedly in police custody, and whose mother is reportedly among the school fatalities.

The thought of losing a child in a random act of violence struck many parents after the attack. "Imagining being a parent outside that school with my son unaccounted for. I can't. I just can't," Aaron Gouveia, who blogs about parenthood at www.daddyfiles.com, wrote on his Twitter account.

"Already I've had a couple of phone calls from parents saying, 'My anxiety is over the top now, and what can I do?'" said Deborah Gilboa, a family physician who advises parents through her website www.AskDoctorG.com.

Coping with fear

Indeed, the thought of sending your kid out into a world where even schools can be dangerous is understandably terrifying. It's important to keep perspective, Gilboa told LiveScience, and to remember "there are a lot of 'God forbids' in our kids' lives, and yet we and they go on living in the world." [5 Ways to Foster Self-Compassion in Your Child]

Remembering the relative rarity of school shootings may do little to ease the pain while the images from Connecticut are still fresh, however, Gilboa said.

"The first thing I say, to be honest, is to turn off the television," Gilboa said. Following the news coverage minute-by-minute may seem helpful or as if it's somehow making the events less terrible, she said, but it's not.

"If it's causing you a great deal of anxiety, it is alright to step away from the computer and away from the television, and find out the entire story, as much as possible, in a few days," she said. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends limiting your child's exposure to media reports about traumatic events.

It may help to realize that fear and anxiety are normal reactions to an event like this, said Priscilla Dass-Brailsford, a psychiatrist at Georgetown University Medical Center who specializes in violence and trauma.

"That is a very fast reaction when anything bad happens," Dass-Brailsford told Livescience. "You immediately think of the people that are close to you, and you want to reach out to them to make sure they are safe."

Talking with your kids about tragedy

Parents may also face the challenge of explaining the shootings to their own children. It's important to let kids express their emotions, Gilboa said, and to help them find ways to feel helpful. Just as adults may feel the urge to donate to charity or do something useful in the wake of a tragedy, kids can be comforted by simple actions like making cards for survivors or coming up with ways their school can help.

Helping your children focus on the goodness that often follows tragedy can also help them cope, Gilboa said. [Watch: How to Help Kids Cope with Trauma]? ??

Taking some control over your own emergency plans can also help ease both parents' and children's fears, Gilboa said. FEMA provides guidelines on how to prepare emergency plans and emergency kits in case of disasters that hit midday, when school and work keep families separated. Parents might also call their children's schools to find out their emergency protocols, Gilboa said.

Tips for talking with kids about difficult subjects in the news, according to the Public Broadcast Corporation, include: finding out what your child knows and understands by asking open-ended questions; explaining events in simple, age-appropriate terms; acknowledging the child's feelings and expressing reassurance.

In the case of fear about school shootings, Gilboa said, parents can explain to their children that the adults in their lives do everything they can to keep the kids safe.

Parents also need to take care of themselves in order to take care of their children, Dass-Brailsford said. Know your own emotions and handle them by talking with other parents, mental-health professionals or even by calling a parenting hotline, Gilboa and Dass-Brailsford suggested. Kids look to parents for emotional cues, and appearing overly anxious may make it more difficult for kids to cope.?

"Parents might get really, really anxious," Dass-Brailsford said. "Make sure you don't communicate that to your children. Communicate love and care, but don't communicate anxiety."

Russian investigators accuse Navalny of fraud

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian investigators on Friday accused a prominent opposition leader of fraud and money-laundering, intensifying legal pressure on the anti-Kremlin protest movement as it prepares to hold its next big demonstration this weekend.

Investigators said they suspect Alexei Navalny and his brother Oleg of defrauding a transportation company of 55 million rubles ($1.8 million) by overcharging it for postal services. Navalny wrote on Twitter that the accusations were "utter nonsense" and suggested they were aimed at targeting his family in reprisal for his efforts to mobilize opposition to President Vladimir Putin.

A 36-year-old charismatic lawyer, Navalny first made his name exposing corruption in state-controlled companies. He then spearheaded a series of street rallies in Moscow that drew up to 100,000 people before last March's vote that handed Putin a third presidential term.

Navalny's personal assistant, lawyer and brother all told Russian media they had learned of the charges through news reports and were unaware of any summons for questioning.

Brother Oleg Navalny's office was searched on Friday and so were the premises of the firm owned by Navalny's parents.

Navalny was charged in July with stealing 16 million rubles (about $500,000) in assets from a state timber company, threatening him with a 10-year prison sentence. Navalny has called the timber charges "absurd" and "shameless."

The Russian opposition is gearing up for another major demonstration on Saturday, marking roughly a year since the mass anti-Putin protests began. The Moscow city government has refused to authorize the opposition rally, so it is likely to be dispersed by police.

Navalny's mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, on Friday accused authorities of putting pressure on her son. She told the Ekho Moskvy radio station that the investigators' announcement aimed to "blackmail my son through his family, to keep him away from that march, to make him stop his political activities."

She said the entire family stands by Navalny and his work.

Investigators have accused several other opposition figures of crimes in the buildup to the protest. State-linked media released transcripts and audio recordings Thursday that the federal Investigative Committee said proved protest leaders, including prominent left-wing activist Sergei Udaltsov, had followed the orders of Georgian officials intent on overthrowing the Russian government.

Singer-songwriter Carole King to receive U.S. Gershwin prize

(Reuters) - American singer-songwriter Carole King will be awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the U.S. national library said on Thursday.

The multiple Grammy Award winner co-wrote her first No. 1 hit at age 17 with then-husband Gerry Goffin and was the first female solo artist to sell more than 10 million copies of a single album, with her 1971 release "Tapestry."

The prize honors individuals for lifetime achievement in popular music, the library said. It is named after songwriting brothers George and Ira Gershwin.

King, now 70, topped the charts with the song "It's Too Late" in 1971, but is best known for her work performed by others, including "You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin.

"I was so pleased when the venerable Library of Congress began honoring writers of popular songs with the Gershwin Prize," King said in a statement. "I'm proud to be the fifth such honoree and the first woman among such distinguished company."

King and Goffin wrote some the biggest hits of the 1960s before their nine-year marriage ended in 1968. They rose to prominence in 1960 writing "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" for the Shirelles.

The duo also scored hits with "Take Good Care of My Baby," performed by Bobby Vee in 1961, "The Loco-Motion," performed by Little Eva in 1962 and "Pleasant Valley Sunday," performed by The Monkees in 1967, among others.

New York-born King did not hit it big as a singer until 1971, when "Tapestry" topped the U.S. album charts for 15 weeks, then a record for a female solo artist.

Past recipients of the award include Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and songwriting tandem Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Smart building blocks let kids engineer tech creations with ease

9 hrs.

A new toy company is using Kickstarter to help fund a set of intelligent building blocks called Atoms Express Toys. They fit together like LEGO blocks, but also work as sensors, motors and wireless connectors, allowing a child to build a remote control car in a matter of minutes.

Seamless Toy Company is making Atoms, which is the brainchild of CEO and founder Michael Rosenblatt, a former MIT Media Lab member who worked at Apple.?On Wednesday,?Atoms Express Toys hit their $100,000 goal on Kickstarter.?NBC News talked with Rosenblatt about his new endeavor.?

This area of the toy world is largely dominated by LEGO's Mindstorms sets and a couple other smart-blocks products. Rosenblatt says that while what's out there is very cool and capable, it's both expensive and not really conducive to plain old play.

"There's a lot of steps when you get it out of the box???you have to install software, download stuff. It's hard for kids to pick up and run with," Rosenblatt said. "Our immediate plan for the kits was to?give kids something to do right out of the box."

Indeed, the process of creating something like a robot with wheels and headlights, controlled by a tilt-sensitive remote, is accomplished in minutes rather than hours. Construction acts as a tutorial as well: Plug the wires in differently and you'll reverse the way something spins, or make a lamp that turns on in the dark rather than the light.

That's an important part of the process, Rosenblatt said. Creation and experimentation are critical to making future scientists and engineers, which is why he decided to make Atoms in the first place. And he's not the only one who thinks so.

Mitchel Resnick, a former colleague of Rosenblatt's at MIT and creator of Scratch, a programming environment for kids, agrees that "the?most?important?thing that's needed is more opportunities for young people to design, create, and experiment," he told NBC News.

"We need people to grow up as creative thinkers. We should be developing high-tech toys that embody that same creative spirit of building blocks and modeling clay."

Instead, high-tech toys try to deliver entertainment, he said. And that doesn't just mean video games: "The key issue is not whether it's on or off the screen, it's whether the kids are in control of the experience." He cited "Minecraft" and his own Scratch project as toys or games that provided tools for creation rather than just a single experience.

Of course,?kids want to be entertained as well. To that end, the first Atoms kits include pieces that form basic projects like a rolling monster or remote-control propeller, but modules?can be combined with LEGO and other decorative pieces to extend their versatility. Every piece has Velcro for easy attachment, and little loops so they can be sewn onto clothing or stuffed animals. There's software available for iOS devices, and Android support is on the way.

Altogether there are 13 modules, from battery and Bluetooth blocks to motors and lights. The company?focused on kid-friendly modules?for the launch, but more advanced ones are on the way after the product gets out the door, likely in spring 2013.

Proximity and RFID sensors, stronger motors, fans, even a camera attachment are in the works. Building a robot you can log into from your iPad and roll around the house with could be done with a handful of blocks.

Rosenblatt says that projects like this last one, which could be enjoyed both?by kids and?their parents, are critical to making Atoms and Seamless Toy a success.

"There are people out there who think that starting a toy company in 2012 is like starting a record shop," he said. And indeed, from the proliferation of tablets and video games, it might seem that toys are a dwindling market. And it's true that the toy industry is shrinking ? but it's also changing.

"That's why it needs to be multi-generational," Rosenblatt said. In other words, it's important that this "toy" can be made into either a spinning magic wand... or a keyless ignition system for a car. The devices are simple and open enough that such things are possible, although naturally making a remote control door lock or email-activated cat feeder takes a bit more work.

But it's a toy first and foremost, and the team looks to children?for inspiration.?

"It's neat to see what they want to do," said Rosenblatt, "Because they're not thinking in terms of proximity sensors ? they're saying 'I want this to activate when the cat walks by.'?"

The Government May Soon Force You to Include U.S. Treasuries In ...

There are huge amounts of money in the IRA ($3.5 trillion)?and 401(k) ($5.1 trillion) retirement plans in the U.S. (another $9.9 trillion in assets?held?elsewhere) according to a recent?Investment Company Institute study?which makes it very tempting for government to try and get at it. [While] the government may, or may not, tax the money, they may force you to include a sizable percentage of the retirement assets in your IRA and/or 401(k) in U.S. Treasury securities, which may be among the worst investments in the years ahead as interest rates go up and price inflation eats away at the buying power of those IOUs. [Let me explain.] Words: 802

So says Robert Wenzel, Editor & Publisher of www.EconomicPolicyJournal.com, in edited excerpts from his original article* entitled How the Government Is Coming After Your IRA and 401(k) Plan.

Lorimer Wilson, editor of www.FinancialArticleSummariesToday.com (A site for sore eyes and inquisitive minds) and www.munKNEE.com (Your Key to Making Money!), may have further edited ([ ]), abridged (?) and/or reformatted (some sub-titles and bold/italics emphases) the article below for the sake of clarity and brevity to ensure a fast and easy read. The author?s views and conclusions are unaltered and no personal comments have been included to maintain the integrity of the original article. Please note that this paragraph must be included in any article re-posting to avoid copyright infringement.

Wenzel goes on to say, in part:

World News Daily reports[**]?on how the government may try to expand the IRA program and then get its hands on that money:

Recent evidence suggests government officials continue to eye the multi-trillion dollar private retirement savings market, including IRAs and 401(k) plans, eyeing the opportunity to redistribute private retirement savings to less affluent Americans and to force the retirement savings out of the private market and into government-controlled programs investing in government-issued debt?

Since 2010, the U.S. Treasury Department and the Department of Labor have been holding combined hearings ?to explore why Americans are not saving as much for their retirement as they couldv and to develop various plans designed to introduce government-mandated retirement plans and investment options, including government annuities invested primarily in U.S. Treasury debt, into the private retirement savings market.

National Seniors Council National Director Robert Crone [has?described the combined hearings as being nothing more than] ?just the first step toward a government takeover. It feels like the beginning of the debate over health care and we all know how that ended up.

With the issuance of the White House 256-page Budget Proposal for Fiscal Year 2013, the Obama administration endorsed Automatic IRAs, a plan introduced into Congress in 2010 by Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass, and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., in which private companies would be automatically enrolled into government-mandated IRAs, forcing those businesses to contribute on behalf of their employees a default amount equal to 3% of an employees pay, unless an employee specifically opts out of the plan.
The FY 2013 Budget proposal notes that currently 78 million working Americans, roughly half of the work force, lack employer-based retirement plans?

The Service Employee International Union, or SEIU, a key labor union ally of the Obama administration, has mounted an effort to create government-mandated worker retirement accounts as an entitlement program, with the possibility that a portion of all private retirement funds could be forced into U.S. Treasury debt.

Branding the program Retirement USA, the SEIU has joined with the AFL-CIO, the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington-based economic left-leaning think tank that receives substantial labor funding, and two other left-leaning interest groups, the Pension Rights Center and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security.

The Retirement USA idea is promot[ing] the concept that all workers in the U.S. have a right to a government retirement account that would fund a secure retirement with adequate dollars, in addition to Social Security and private ERISA-retirement workplace retirement programs such as 401(k) programs.
Our goal is to involve all workers and all employees in a government-mandated retirement program, with the government putting up the difference for lower paid employees, Nancy Hwa, a spokeswoman for the participating Pension Rights Center, told WND in 2010.

Put simply, the Retirement USA government-mandated workplace retirement account would require, by law, employers and employees to contribute to a retirement account for every employee and demand that a portion of that contribution go into a federal-government created annuity that would be funded by purchasing Treasury debt?

Under the guise of making workplace retirement savings accounts available to all Americans and insuring that existing retirement savings accounts pay lifetime income, the SEIU-led Retirement USA effort is quietly exploring strategies that would create Universal IRAs or Guaranteed Retirement Accounts for all workers.

Writing in the London Telegraph in October 2008, business and economics editor Ambrose Evans-Pritchard warned that G7 nations, including the United States, may begin following the path of Argentina in forcing privately managed pension funds to be invested in government-issued debt.

Bottom line:

The government may not tax your money, it may instead force you to buy Treasury securities with your money. For the government, it is pretty much the same thing as a tax. It results in your money ending up in government coffers to spend at will by government. In turn, you will receive government IOU?s, i.e., Treasury securities, which may be among the worst investments in the years ahead as interest rates go up and price inflation eats away at the buying power of those IOUs.

Humans Have Been Eating Cheese For At Least 7,500 Years

Making and eating cheese, beer, and bread define what it is to be fully human. Any dirty ape can go club a mammoth and bring it back to its den, but to domesticate two different kinds of creatures (a mammal and a bacterium, or a grass and a yeast) and use one to rot the other and come out with something even tastier than the original? That requires massive intelligence, communication, tool use, planning, and social structure.

(PS: if any modern cultures exist that don't eat cheese, beer, or bread, I don't mean to imply that they're not fully human. Their current environment might not have the resources to do these things, but you can bet their ancestors knew how.)

Bosnian Serb wartime intelligence chief gets life jail term

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal sentenced Bosnian Serb general Zdravko Tolimir to life in prison on Wednesday for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Europe's worst atrocity since World War Two.

U.N. judges said Tolimir, 64, an intelligence chief and close aide to Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, planned and oversaw the killing of 8,000 Muslim men and boys after the town of Srebenica was overrun in July.

The massacre was part of a campaign of ethnic cleansing carried out by nationalist Serbs determined to carve out a Serb state in Bosnia by removing all of the multi-ethnic province's Muslims and Croats. The 1992-95 war killed 100,000 people.

"The crimes were massive in scale, severe in intensity and devastating in effect," presiding judge Christoph Flugge said when reading the verdict at the Hague-based tribunal.

He said Tolimir had been close to Mladic and was referred by witnesses as his "right-hand man and eyes and ears."

Tolimir was found guilty of genocide, conspiring to commit genocide, violations of the laws and customs of wars and crimes against humanity including murder, persecution and exterminations of non-Muslims.

He was arrested in June 2007 on the border between Serbia and Bosnia's Serb Republic and is thought by security experts to have helped Mladic evade arrest until then.

Mladic was eventually captured in Serbia last year after 16 years on the run and is now standing trial in The Hague for the Srebrenica massacre and other alleged war crimes.

New method to understand superconductors

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Researchers at The Open University have devised a new method to understand the processes that happen when atoms cool which could lead to new materials for superconducting power grids and widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

In a paper, "Bilayers of Rydberg atoms as a quantum simulator for unconventional superconductors" just published in Physical Review Letters, Dr Jim Hague and Dr Calum McCormick at The Open University's Department of Physical Sciences describe a new method to understand the cooling of atoms, which is to simulate a superconductor using a "quantum simulator" (a kind of bespoke quantum computer for examining specific problems) rather than a supercomputer.

The researchers found that just such a simulator can be built to examine atoms cooled to just a millionth of a degree above absolute zero. The atoms are controlled using laser beams which enhance the electrical forces between the atoms, which are usually weak and unimportant. These forces mimic the physics of the superconductor, and the proposed simulator includes far more physical detail than ever before.

"The problem is that up to now nobody knew how to build such a material because physics of the best superconductors are extremely difficult to understand," said Dr Hague. "By studying the atoms in the quantum simulator, we expect that it will be possible to make major progress in unravelling the underlying theory of these fascinating materials. A superconductor (a material with no electrical resistance) operating close to room temperature would offer potentially revolutionary technology."

Microsoft may turn to mobile gaming for crowdsourced mapping data

Microsoft may look to users for updated mapping data with mobile gaming

Keeping map data relevant's a full-time job -- just ask Nokia, Google and, yes, even Apple. Which is why Microsoft may be gearing up to offload some of that heavy lifting to users in the augmented reality guise of mobile gaming. Or at least that's one possible future outlined by a recently surfaced patent application. The USPTO doc, filed back in June of 2011, clearly lays out a crowdsourced "data collection system" whereby users sent on virtual missions to specific real-world targets would aid in the gathering of up-to-date geo-location data. With its thriving Xbox gaming arm and reinvigorated inroads into the mobile space, it wouldn't be much of a stretch for Microsoft to leverage a bit of corporate synergy to make its own mapping service more accurate, or simply license the data. Whatever the case may be, it's all up in legal limbo for the time being. So, for now, you'll have to content yourselves with AR missions of the Ingress kind.
