Met Gala Beauty 2013: The Best & Worst Hair And Makeup On The Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

With a theme like "Punk: Chaos to Couture," it was pretty hard deciphering between the best and worst beauty looks at the 2013 Met Gala. But the editors here at HuffPost Style bravely took on the challenge.

The rebellious fashion statements that arose in the early to mid-1970s in both New York and London offered an array of inspiration for Monday night's fete. We nearly fainted when Nicole Richie strolled onto the red carpet with grey hair. Meanwhile, Giovanna Battaglia must have broken a world record for wearing the most safety pins as hair accessories.

While there was hair and makeup that shocked us in a good way, quite a few celebrities got lost in translation. (We're looking at you, Miley Cyrus and Ginnifer Goodwin!) See all of these beauty looks and more in the slideshow below, and be sure to vote for your favorite.

Met Gala 2013: Where punk meets pretty:

  • BEST: Karolina Kurkova

We don't know what we love more: the model's sexy black eyeliner or her slicked-back hairdo. Both showcase her amazing bone structure.

  • WORST: Emmy Rossum

The actress nailed the smokey eye, but her hair is another story -- it kind of resembles a bird's nest.

  • BEST: Rooney Mara

Bold brows, burgundy lips and big lashes are the trifecta of punk beauty.

  • WORST: Jennifer Morrison

We respect the "Once Upon a Time" star for attempting a faux hawk, but Morrison's look was a little too sloppy for our taste.

  • BEST: Nicole Richie

We haven't seen stunning grey hair on a bronzed beauty since "X-Men's" Storm.

  • WORST: Jamie King

Just because you're attending a ball, doesn't mean you have to wear a bejeweled headband. Also, can King even see with all that hair in her eyes?

  • BEST: Karlie Kloss

Karlie's black-brown, textured updo added the right amount of edge to her '30s-inspired Louis Vuitton dress.

  • WORST: Sienna Miller

Stud overload. We commend the "Just Like a Woman" star for dressing according to the theme, but sometimes, less is more.

  • BEST: Kristen Stewart

By sticking to what she does best -- smokey eyes -- Stewart secured a spot on our best beauty list with her unconventional red eyeshadow.

  • BEST: Giovanna Battaglia

The Met Ball is probably the best time to pile on safety pin hair accessories.

  • BEST: Nicki Minaj

This is probably the only time we're going to give the "American Idol" judge's wild, crimped hair and dark lips a pass.

  • WORST: Katy Perry

Perry looks like she belongs in a painting at the Louvre.

  • BEST: Jessica Pare

The "Mad Men" star's center-parted and slicked-back hair balances her extreme smokey eye makeup.

  • WORST: Mary-Kate Olsen

We get it, MK. You're doing that whole boho-chic thing, but you're at a ball. Would it be too much to ask to use a hair brush?

  • BEST: Jennifer Lopez

How many ways can you spell "fierce?" J.Lo does it again, sporting the best pompadour of the night (or maybe of the year?).

  • WORST: Julie Macklowe

Is that you, Marilyn Manson? Apparently there is such a thing as taking a theme too far.

  • BEST: Julianne Hough

Julianne's bold brows and clumpy mascara work with her polished hair and glowy skin.

  • WORST: Ginnifer Goodwin

This is simply a smokey eye gone all the way wrong.

  • BEST: Solange

We gotta give Solange props for forgoing the punk theme and keeping it chic with her fashion ode to the '70s.

  • WORST: Miley Cyrus

Hellraiser called and said that he wants his look back.

  • BEST: Minka Kelly

Minka looks magnificent with a braided updo and wine lipstick.

  • WORST: Lily Collins

When you're lucky to have a natural set of thick brows like Collins, it's best to leave them be and play up your hair.

  • BEST: Jessica Alba

This fashionable mommy incorporated Fallon jewelry into her braided updo for an edgy finish.

  • BEST: Ashley Olsen

Ashley upstaged her twin sister with perfectly tousled locks and minimal makeup.

  • BEST: Marion Cotillard

We know that Cotillard's pretty pink dress and retro waves don't exactly go with the punk theme, but when you look this cute, no one can fault you.

  • BEST: Sarah Jessica Parker

Only SJP can pull off a Philip Treacy headpiece like this and look like a total punk star!

  • BEST: Cameron Diaz

Cameron's understated hair and makeup are simply perfection.

  • BEST: Katie Holmes

Holmes is the picture of elegance and grace with her gorgeous smokey eye and sophisticated pompadour.

  • BEST: Carey Mulligan

We love the English actress' nude lips, winged eyeliner and sleek, side-swept bands.

  • BEST: Coco Rocha

    Okay, we're getting bangs.

  • BEST: Anne Hathaway

Wow! Drawing inspiration from punk icons like Poly Styrene from X-ray Spex and Joan Jett, Anne Hathaway went for a bleached blonde rocker 'do, and let's just say she should keep this look.

  • BEST: Taylor Swift

We're used to seeing a softer side of this pop princess, but the slightly disheveled locks and thick eyeliner are doing her justice.
