SiriusXM fights Liberty Media takeover move ? Designer Children ...

Did Sirius XM Radio Inc. make a Faustian bargain when it decided to accept $530 million from Liberty Media Corp.to stave off bankruptcy in early 2009?

The New York-based satellite radio companyfiled a petition late Friday afternoon with theFederal Communications Commission, urging that the agency deny a request by Liberty Media Corp. that soughtto transfer several of SiriusXM?s operating licenses to Liberty?s control. Liberty owns 40% of SiriusXM and occupies fiveof its 13board seats.

Liberty?s request, filedMarch 20,include SiriusXM?searth station licensesanditsterrestrial repeaterlicense. The FCC requires SiriusXM to have all three licenses to operate.

But SiriusXM fought back, arguing in a 24-page petition that Liberty failed to get proper signatures from the companys board for its transfer request.

This is the equivalent of trying to cash an unsigned check and explaining the lack of a signature by saying nothing more than the account holder refused to sign it, SiriusXM?s attorneys wrote.

Liberty Media?s intent, and the intent ofChairman John Malone, is unclear. The company did not state a reason for seeking control of those licenses and messages to Liberty Media?s spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

At issue is whether Liberty?s 40% stake in SiriusXM allows Malone to assume ownership of the satellite radio company, which last year earned a $427-million profit on more than $3 billion in revenue.

What?s clear is that SiriusXM?s last-minute arrangement with Libertyaverted financial disaster, allowing the New York satellite radio company to make a $172-million payment on its high-interest loans justdays before it was due in February 2009. The transaction also gave Liberty Media fiveof 13 seats on the company?s board.

The deal also barred Liberty Media from trying to take over SiriusXM by acquiring 39.9% or more of SiriusXM?s stock. That provision expired March 6.

Islamist draws crowds in Egypt election campaign

CAIRO (Reuters) - A sheikh who blends hardline Islamism with revolutionary zeal is emerging as a frontrunner in the race for the Egyptian presidency, buoyed by a popular touch which even his critics say is striking a chord with many voters.

Hazem Salah Abu Ismail's message has moved from the mosque to the masses in the year since Hosni Mubarak was swept from power, helped by a campaign which to date appears one of the best funded. His posters are everywhere, put up by dedicated supporters to whom he is both a celebrity and visionary.

"This man knows how to speak to people in their own language," said Aladin Nounou, a factory owner who says most of his 600 workers count themselves as Abu Ismail admirers.

A lawyer by profession, Abu Ismail got a warm reception from thousands of adoring students at a Cairo University rally on Tuesday. A day later, there was another big turnout in Mansoura, a Nile Delta city north of the capital.

To liberals, leftists and others worried by the rise of Islamist influence in the post-Mubarak Egypt, the prominence of a man committed to a tighter application of Islamic law is yet another cause for concern about the direction of the country of 80 million. Islamist parties already dominate the parliament.

Analysts who discounted him a few months ago believe that Abu Ismail could make it to the second round of the election, foreseeing a run-off that might pit him against former Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, a liberal nationalist, or another of the candidates.

With the long beard of a Salafi Muslim, softly-spoken Abu Ismail is finding supporters among Egyptians who voted for both the Muslim Brotherhood and the ultraconservative Nour Party in the legislative elections. Together, they won two thirds of the parliament.

To date, neither has decided to field their own candidate for the presidency, though the Brotherhood is reviewing a previous decision not to run. Trying to project a moderate image, the group has distanced itself from the Salafis.

Abu Ismail is the most hardline of a group of independent Islamists running in the May election. He is campaigning under the slogan "We will live in dignity" - a statement splashed in conservative blue across T-shirts worn by his supporters.

FUNDING QUESTIONS

While he has said there should be no quick application of strict Islamic codes, his program says a Muslim ruler should work towards applying widely-accepted elements of the sharia, for example, by prohibiting alcohol - a step that could have a deep impact on an economy heavily dependent on tourism.

Abu Ismail's critics have gone online in an effort to undermine his credibility. He has been the focus of hundreds of irreverent jokes on the web.

There are also allegations - denied by his supporters - that Abu Ismail's funding is coming from the Gulf and that he is manipulating religious sentiment for political gain.

"There is something that is unequal," said a worker from a rival campaign. "The kind of money he is spending all over the country, the advertising, the fliers, the posters. We have no idea where his funding is coming from."

Abu Ismail does not shy away from controversy. In an interview with a religious TV channel posted on Youtube last year, he said he and al Qaeda shared the same goal - an apparent reference to an Islamic state - though he added that the militant network that advocates global jihad was "mistaken".

His supporters cite charisma, composure and an unambiguous commitment to religious law as some of his assets. "He is truly a sincere person," said Ahmed al-Sayed, a 21-year old engineering student who voted for the Brotherhood in the legislative election but is now campaigning for Abu Ismail.

"That mixture of charisma and Islamic law is something that is appealing. Nobody else is really offering that," said Shadi Hamid, an expert on Islamist movements at the Brookings Institute in Doha. "There is a place for right-wing populism."

In southern Egypt, Abu Ismail posters have been plastered to wells in villages that are hard to find on the map and near ancient Pharaonic temples. In one village, two of his admirers, both women, made no mention of his Islamist credentials but said they liked his soft tone and believed he had the patience to fix the country.

Abu Ismail's appearance at Cairo University on Tuesday offered a glimpse of the popularity he enjoys. Thousands of students squeezed into an auditorium to hear him speak, packing the aisles. Some perched precariously on window ledges.

"The people want Hazem Abu Ismail," they chanted, stamping their feet in unison and unleashing a deafening cheer as he took to the stage. Dozens of campaign workers formed a human chain to hold back crowd surges. At least one attendee fainted.

Jostled by supporters as he took his seat, a beaming Abu Ismail spoke for more than an hour, explaining how the country of 80 million had been held back intentionally, all the while maintaining the calm tone seen as one element of his appeal.

The economy had been forced into an over reliance on tourism to make it subservient to foreigners, he said, though he pledged to expand the industry's income eight-fold.

"WE ARE NOT A WEAK NATION"

Dressed in a suit and tie, he alleged that both United States and Israel were seeking to subvert the presidential election to their own ends and cited Iran as a model of a state that had shaken off U.S. influence to stand on its own feet.

He did, however, quickly point out his doctrinal differences with the Shi'ite Islam espoused by its theocratic government.

"The time has come, and hear these words clearly, for us to find the elements of our strength inside our country," he said, triggering chants of "Where are the journalists? The president is here".

"We are not a weak nation," he said.

"By attacking those who are perceived as our victimizers, he hits a favorable chord with his audience," said Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University. "He speaks in a very soft way, using a language that is quite appealing to the Egyptian people."

At 50, Abu Ismail is one of the younger of the frontrunners for the presidency. Moussa is 75. Others include Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, another independent Islamist who was expelled from the Brotherhood last year for deciding to run against it wishes.

File Manager

Rhythm Software's File Manager is a solid app for managing data on an Android device. There's a lot to like about it, including a sleek, user-friendly interface, easy-to-execute commands like copy, paste, and delete, as well as decent network browsing.

Comparisons to X-plore, another great app for Android file management, are inevitable, as both are good apps. I do however, like the hierarchal, double-pane view of X-plore better as well as a few other features. But Rhythm Software's File Manager is definitely worth a look.

Installation
File Manager is a simply-named app for managing files on Android devices. This free 1.5MB-sized app installs on Android OS versions 1.6 and up. There is also a free HD version for tablets. As with other apps in the category, installation was quick and easy.

Interface
This app?has a very user-friendly interface that emulates Windows Explorer in Windows 7. Image and video files have thumbnails and other files have icons. File extensions show the file type. Directories are viewable in list or grid mode. Sorting is available by name, date, size, or type. I sorted by date and was surprised to see two folders stamped December 31, 1979! All other dates seemed in order, though.

When you hold down a particular file or folder icon for a few seconds a menu pops up. The menu lists all the available actions such as viewing details or performing a copy, delete, move, rename, bookmark, share, or compression?which zips the file.

Everything worked well, although I had an issue with the 'Move' feature. When you tap on Move, nothing happens on screen. I didn't see a move take place nor did I see a way to move the file. In X-plore, as soon as you tap 'Move,' the app moves the file to the SD card by default and displays a progress status. You know the file is moving.

File Manager also lacks built-in file viewers. X-plore has its own built in preview capabilities for opening multimedia files, useful if you happen to not have an app installed that can view a media file, or have problems with the app you usually use.
File Manager's search feature is more robust than X-plore's, however. You can perform a search to pull up all images, audio or video files, whereas X-plore lets you search for all .JPGs, or .MP3 or .TXT files.

Storage Analysis and Settings
Storage Analysis is a nice feature. It tells you which directory is taking the most storage and lists down to the one taking the least.? It also displays the total amount and available amount of storage on the device and SD card.?

In 'Settings' you have some customization options such as show or hide hidden files and thumbnails. This is also the place to change the look of the app by selecting a dark or light theme.? You can also configure the app to automatically mount folders. Root Explorer is a feature for advanced users; it's enabled to modify files under /root and requires a rooted phone. File Manager also has a refresh button for refreshing the interface ? something lacking in Xplore.

I was able to successfully connect and browse shares on a Windows Server 8 computer.? The app picked up other connected machines with a scan as well.

File Manager vs Xplore
Both File Manager and Xplore do a good job with Android file management. The one you prefer may come down to personal preference. I particularly like the hierarchal, double pane display in X-plore. It's very detailed and makes it easy to see directory structure. Xplore also features built-in Picasa support and can be used to view database files. It's rated at 3.5 stars, just a bit under 4 star-earner X-plore, which is more feature heavy. Still, File Manager is a very good choice for file management and some tasks like search and refresh, are better than in Xplore.

Jessica Sanchez on American Idol: A Sweet Dream or a Beautiful Nightmare?

Jessica Sanchez went all Beyonce on American Idol judges and viewers last night.

No, she didn't ask a man to put a ring on it. And she may be crazy in love with someone, but that wasn't Jessica's performance focus.

Instead, this singer went the ballad route again and gave us a beautiful rendition of "Sweet Dreams." Steven Tyler told Sanchez she really "knows her notes," while Randy Jackson referred to her as a naturally born star. What did you think of this cover?

And where would you say Sanchez stands overall? How does she match up with other top performers from this week, including Joshua Ledet or Elise Testone?

One of the things you will think about is lighting when it comes to home improvement. Most probably, you will start window shopping for the type of lighting fixtures you will install in the house. When doing that, you should ensure that you know the kind of design and style you will renovate the home with. This is important because it allows you to choose lighting fixtures that will match with the styles perfectly. After all, there is no need of having one style for your furniture and home and another for lighting fixtures. With the style in mind, you will also need to choose the fixtures to use. There are several common fixtures to choose one of which is ceiling lighting. One of the plumbers who also knew much about the house design and Sealite provided the following information.

Ceiling lighting as the name suggests, this is a type of lighting in which the lighting bulb or lamp is attached to the ceiling. This is done in several ways. One, a rim can be installed on the ceiling where the lamp is put. A good example of this is the flush mount ceiling light. This is usually a large rounded or rectangular object which can be used with one or more bulbs. The number of bulbs to use is determined by the amount of illumination you would like to have in the room.

If you want to have a lot of light, you can have several bulbs in a single flush mount. You can also install several flush lights in the room. Alternatively, you can use the flash mount lighting together with other types of lighting for instance wall lighting or accent lighting. When used singly, ceiling lighting is good for bathrooms and other areas of the home that do not need a lot of lighting.

Another way in which ceiling lighting can be done is using pendant lighting fixtures. In this case, you have a structure that resembles a pendant. They hang down from the ceiling. The support wire is fixed on the ceiling holding the pendant like structure which holds the bulb. These kinds of fixtures can have one bulb or many bulbs. In most cases, chandelier is used when there is need to have more than one bulb. The chandelier to be used depends on the number of bulbs you would like to have. Some can hold more than ten bulbs. Pendant fixtures are better when used in areas where a lot of illumination is needed. This includes the kitchen, stairway and on the door entrance. However, you can also install them in other areas of the home you would like to.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments on Monday over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, derisively labeled "Obamacare" by its opponents. A look at how the case will unfold before the court in question-and-answer form:

Q: What's this all about?

A: The Supreme Court is hearing a challenge to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which is Obama's signature domestic achievement. Passed by Congress in 2010, its aim is to provide health insurance to more than 30 million previously uninsured Americans, while trying to restrain costs and prevent disruptions to the majority already with coverage. Opponents say the law is unconstitutional; their chief argument is that Congress does not have the power to force unwilling Americans to buy health insurance or pay a fine.

Q: When will the court get started?

A: Justices will begin hearing arguments shortly after 10 a.m. EDT Monday, March 26. They will hear six hours of arguments on several different issues on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Q: Which issues on which days?

A: Monday's 90-minute argument is about whether court action is premature because no one yet has paid a fine for not having health insurance. Tuesday's two-hour argument will cover the central issue of whether Congress overstepped its authority by requiring Americans to purchase health insurance starting in 2014 or pay a penalty. Wednesday's arguments will be split into two parts: Justices will hear 90 minutes of debate in the morning over whether the rest of the law can take effect even if the health insurance mandate is unconstitutional and another hour Wednesday afternoon over whether the law goes too far in coercing states to expand the federal-state Medicaid program for low-income people by threatening to cut off federal aid to states that don't comply.

Q: When will the justices rule?

A: The court could decide any time, but complex cases argued in the spring normally produce decisions near the end of the court's session, scheduled for late June.

Q: Is it possible that the justices won't decide whether the law is constitutional or not?

A: It is possible. The first issue the court is discussing is whether an obscure tax law makes it too early for the Supreme Court to get involved. If they decide that the issue is premature, then the case will be dismissed without a binding ruling from the justices.

Q: What did lower federal courts say?

A: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled that Congress overstepped its authority when lawmakers passed the insurance mandate, the only appeals court to come to that conclusion. The 6th U.S Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld the entire law, as did the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., ruled that the question was premature and the law can't be challenged in court until after 2015, when the first penalties for not having insurance would be paid.

Q: Who are the justices on the Supreme Court?

A: The chief justice is John Roberts, who joined the court in 2005 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. In order of seniority, the other justices are Antonin Scalia (confirmed in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan), Anthony Kennedy (1988 by Reagan), Clarence Thomas (1991 by President George H.W. Bush), Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1993 by President Bill Clinton), Stephen Breyer (1994 by Clinton), Samuel Alito (2006 by President George W. Bush), Sonia Sotomayor (2009 by Obama) and Elena Kagan (2010 by Obama.)

Q: Who will be arguing for the law?

A: Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. will argue for the government on Monday and Tuesday. Deputy Solicitor General Edwin S. Kneedler will present part of the government's case on Wednesday, and Verrilli will do the rest. Information about Verrilli and the solicitor general's office can be found here: http://www.justice.gov/osg/index.html . A court-appointed lawyer, H. Bartow Farr III, will also argue that if government cannot require people to buy health insurance, all other provisions of the law can go into effect. Another court-appointed lawyer, Robert Long, will also argue that the lawsuits challenging the insurance purchase requirement are premature because the penalty has yet to be imposed.

Q: Who will be arguing against the law?

A: Representing Florida on Monday will be Washington appellate lawyer Gregory G. Katsas. Former Solicitor General Paul Clement, now in private practice, will represent Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. Former Justice Department attorney Michael A. Carvin will represent the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

Q: Can I go watch the arguments, and if I can't make it to Washington, can I watch on television or online?

A: The Supreme Court does not allow live television or radio broadcasts from inside its building, so the only way Americans can actually see or hear the arguments live is to be inside the courtroom while lawyers and justices debate. There are seats reserved inside the courtroom for members of the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with some people allowed to stay for the entire argument while others have to leave the courtroom and give their seats to the next people in line after 3-5 minutes. The Supreme Court will also make the audio recording of the arguments available later the same day on its website: http://www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/argument_audio.aspx.

Q: What type of health care do the justices get, and will they be affected by their ruling?

A: The justices participate in the same health care plan as members of Congress and other federal workers. As participants in an employee-sponsored health care plan, it is unlikely that whatever decision the Supreme Court makes will substantially affect their personal health care insurance.

Q: I've heard people say that Justices Elena Kagan and Clarence Thomas should take no part in this case? What's that about?

A: Opponents of the law wanted Kagan to disqualify herself because she served as solicitor general under Obama when the health care overhaul law was conceived and passed. She has said she did not participate in crafting a legal defense for the law, but her detractors doubt her statement. Thomas' detractors insist that he should have disqualified himself because his wife, Ginni, worked with groups that opposed the new law.

Decisions to stay out of a case are the responsibility of each individual justice, and neither Kagan nor Thomas justice stepped aside.

Roberts said in his 2011 year-end report that he has "complete confidence in the capability of my colleagues to determine when recusal is warranted. They are jurists of exceptional integrity and experience whose character and fitness have been examined through a rigorous appointment and confirmation process. I know that they each give careful consideration to any recusal questions that arise in the course of their judicial duties."

NDP convention delegate grounded by labour brethren at Air Canada -- again

TORONTO - When labour-friendly delegates to the federal NDP convention cast their eyes skyward Friday, they may not have been looking for divine inspiration on a leadership choice.

A wildcat strike by Air Canada workers that spread from Toronto through Quebec City, Montreal and Vancouver complicated the life of some New Democrats attempting to get to the weekend convention in Toronto, straining the labour brotherhood for at least one card-carrying member.

More than 80 Air Canada flights were cancelled and some 83 delayed by the illegal walkout, stranding some New Democrats in the process.

"It is very inconvenient for the travelling public, myself included," Griffyn Chezenko, a 24-year-old NDP delegate and St. John's university student, said in Montreal as he waited for a connector flight to his Toronto destination.

"I do sympathize with the workers ? but strictly as a traveller right now, I can't be nothing but pissed-off."

Chezenko's initial flight from Newfoundland was delayed Friday morning and he wasn't sure when he'd get off the ground in Montreal ? even as the final leadership speeches got underway in Toronto.

"I might be fashionably late (for the convention)," he said.

It's not the first time an Air Canada labour dispute has tripped up Canada's champions of labour, the NDP.

Last June, the Canadian Auto Workers created headaches when the union asked the party not to use Air Canada after customer service agents walked off the job on the eve of an NDP policy convention in Vancouver.

Delegates to that policy convention were forced to use the proudly non-union WestJet and other smaller carriers.

NDP MP Jack Harris said he saw a number of protesting Air Canada employers with signs in St. John's on Friday morning, but said his flight to Toronto was not delayed.

The St. John's MP rattled off a list of actions by the Conservative government that he said were hostile to labour, and said he had no difficulty understanding why Friday's illegal ? and unsanctioned ? job action occurred.

"You can't repress people. It's going to pop up somewhere," said Harris, standing at the back of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre hall as afternoon speeches by the candidates progressed.

"This is a case of people saying, 'Look, enough is enough.' They're going to show that they have some spirit left in them. You've got to expect when you act in a heavy-handed manner, people are not going to take it lying down."

Three Air Canada workers were suspended after Labour Minister Lisa Raitt was heckled as she passed through Toronto's Pearson Airport on Thursday evening, said union spokesman Bill Trbovich.

When word of the suspensions spread overnight, their colleagues staged an illegal walkout Friday morning, prompting the brief firing of 37 workers who were subsequently reinstated.

The wildcat strike and travel disruption did not appear to have much impact on the NDP convention floor. The party announced that a record 4,629 delegates had registered as of Friday afternoon ? the biggest convention crowd in the party's history.

A new leader will be chosen Saturday.

Leader of Mali military coup received U.S. training

Alan Boswell | McClatchy Newspapers ? Published March 23, 2012 Modified March 23, 2012

NAIROBI, Kenya ? The leader of the military coup that toppled the democratic government of the West African nation of Mali this week underwent basic officer training in the United States, the Obama administration acknowledged Friday.

Capt. Amadou Sanoga, who is the apparent leader of the group of junior officers that toppled the government of President Amadou Toumani Toure, "participated in several U.S.-funded International Military Education and Training (IMET) programs in the United States, including basic officer training," the U.S. military's Africa Command said in an email to McClatchy.

The State Department confirmed Sanoga's U.S. connection in a separate email.

It was not immediately known which training courses Sanoga had participated in. The IMET programs can include a wide range of activities, including human rights training and study at one of the U.S. military's war colleges.

Whether U.S. officials have been in touch with Sanoga, who declared himself the head of the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and the State, since the coup also was unknown. In an email, State Department African affairs spokeswoman Hilary Renner said only that U.S. diplomats in Mali's capital, Bamako, are "seeking to contact the mutiny leaders to express the U.S. and international position that the civilian elected government must be fully restored without delay."

Sanoga's U.S. ties complicate what was already an inconvenient development in the regional counterterrorism strategy for the United States, which now will have to decide how to deal with a military junta that it's vowed to reject in a country that's a significant front in the war against terror.

"At this moment the United States is pausing any planned military equipment or training programs to the Malian military," Renner wrote. "We remain committed to building the long-term counterterrorism capacities of our partners in the region, including Mali. The restoration of a strong constitutional process and good governance at all levels is a critical priority for counterterrorism efforts."

The whereabouts of President Toure remain unknown, though Renner said "we have seen reports" that the president is safe. She urged the coup leaders to protect the "well-being" of all those they had detained.

Sanoga and his fellow officers have moved quickly to consolidate power. Unless they face a backlash among their military peers or a regional effort to unseat them, the international community might have no choice but to deal with the young new rulers, like it or not, analysts said.

"Mali is what many consider the poster child for democracy in West Africa. It is also an aid darling. What are all these donor countries going to do? It's completely unclear," said Benjamin Soares, a Mali expert at the African Studies Center in Leiden, the Netherlands.

"Of course, there is a long history of coups in the region. Western donors usually say they won't deal with these governments, but they almost always eventually do so," Soares said.

The U.S. military has supported the Mali military extensively over the past decade, and the country has become a significant partner in the U.S. efforts to curb North Africa's shadowy al Qaida affiliate, al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM.

In addition to its involvement in the International Military Education and Training program, Mali has also participated in the Trans Sahara Counter Terrorism Partnership, which is intended to strengthen bilateral military ties with the U.S. and supports counterterrorism coordination across the region's different militaries. Mali also recently hosted U.S. soldiers in a joint logistical exercise named Atlas Accord 12.

"We have regularly had small teams traveling in and out of Mali to conduct specific training that has been requested by the Malian government and military," said Nicole Dalrymple, a spokeswoman for the Africa Command, known as Africom, in an emailed response to questions.

Renner said in her email that the U.S. government "provided almost $138 million dollars in foreign assistance for Mali." Most of that money went to development assistance and global health programs. About $600,000 was allocated for military training. The overall allocation had been expected to rise this year to about $144 million, Renner said.

Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb started in Algeria to the north, but it has made steady inroads into the less-governed regions of the southern Sahara Desert and the Sahel ? the swath across Africa directly south of the Sahara ? as it faced increasing pressure at home. Northern Mali has proven a prime base for its southern operations, which include taking Westerners hostage for ransom.

If the U.S. suspension of its counterterrorism programs continues for a lengthy period of time, it risks a weakened effort to counter AQIM as the Malian military tries to push back a major revolt by nomadic Tuareg tribesmen who've seized much of the country's north. Tuareg control of the north could also give AQIM a safe haven there.

But if the U.S. re-establishes its close military ties, it would be bolstering a regime it has vowed to reject in line with longstanding diplomatic precedent to discourage military coups. Mali had been a functioning democracy for 20 years and Toure was expected to step down without complaint with April 29 elections.

"We are hopeful that the mutiny leaders will see that it is in the country's interest to end their mutiny so that elections can be held as scheduled, " the State Department's Renner said.

The link between the Algeria-based al Qaida affiliate and the rebel Tuaregs, many of whom served in the army of deposed Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi and moved into Mali after Gadhafi's fall, are fluid and opaque, but they both take advantage of the weak controls regional governments exert over the inhospitable Sahara Desert.

Experts differ on how serious a threat AQIM poses to the Western interests in West Africa and beyond. Some even question the group's commitment to the global jihad, since most of its activities have focused on continued attacks back home in Algeria while running lucrative criminal schemes through ransoms and illicit smuggling.

The group's push southward from Algeria has alarmed some diplomats and terrorism experts, who fear the group could bring al Qaida's brand of militant anti-Western Islam deeper into Africa. Washington believes the group already has forged ties to the Nigerian Islamist movement Boko Haram, which was behind the suicide bombing last year of the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

Siege over: French school shooter leaps to his death

The Toulouse, France murder suspect jumped from a window amid a hail of bullets Thursday during a police raid. Mohamed Merah died firing shots at police, say French officials.?

A 23-year-old gunman suspected of killing seven people in southwestern France in the name of Al Qaeda, jumped from a window to his death in a hail of bullets after police stormed his apartment on Thursday.

"At the moment when a video probe was sent into the bathroom, the killer came out of the bathroom, firing with extreme violence," Interior Minister Claude Gueant said, adding that Merah was firing several guns at once.

"In the end, Mohamed Merah jumped from the window with his gun in his hand, continuing to fire. He was found dead on the ground," he told reporters at the scene. Two police commandos were wounded.

Special forces entered the five-story building in a suburb of Toulouse? after besieging Merah since early on Wednesday.

Gueant said earlier police hoped to capture Merah, who had confessed to police negotiators to killing three soldiers as well as three Jewish children and a rabbi at a school, alive.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose already slim chances of beating off a Socialist challenger in next month's presidential election may be affected by his handling of the crisis, has vowed justice will be done and urged people not to seek revenge.

Early on Thursday, the first opinion poll since the school shooting showed Sarkozy would narrowly beat Socialist Francois Hollande in the first-round vote. But Hollande was seen at eight percentage points ahead in the second round.

There had been a long silence overnight from Merah, who said he wanted to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and French army involvement in Afghanistan.

"Despite renewed efforts all through the night to reestablish contact by voice and radio, there has been no contact, no showing from him," Gueant said.

A police source said that the lack of activity picked up by night vision goggles could merely mean that Merah was merely asleep but time was pressing to investigate. "At some point soon we'll have to go in and see," the source said.

Merah, a French citizen of Algerian origin who had been under intelligence surveillance for years, shot at police as they closed in on him in the early hours of Wednesday and later boasted to negotiators that he had brought France to its knees.

He said his only regret was not having been able to carry out more killings.

KISS, Motley Crue announce summer tour

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

KISS and Motley Crue will hit the road together this summer.

By Steve Baltin, Rolling Stone

KISS and Motley Crue gathered today at L.A.'s Roosevelt Hotel to announce "The Tour," a joint summer package that kicks off July 20th in Bristow, Virginia and runs through September 23rd in Hartford, Connecticut. Each band will play about 90 minutes and KISS will close every night.

Calling it "The Tour" is a bold proclamation. But after more than 60 combined years on the road, both bands feel comfortable with living up to that title. "You will scream your head off until it?s no longer on your shoulder and then you?ll feel great. You?ll be drenched, exhausted, and completely satisfied without ever having anyone touch your [expletive]," Gene Simmons told Rolling Stone.

KISS' Paul Stanley has loftier goals though, namely surpassing the band's reputation as one of the great live acts. "What we?re hoping for, and certainly I am, is whatever people?s expectations are, we blow them out of the water," Stanley told Rolling Stone. "I want people to hope for the legend that they?ve heard about and find out it?s greater than that. I think that the longer we?re around the more invincible we become."

Gene Simmons marries longtime girlfriend

This marks the first time the two acts have shared the same stage since Crue opened five dates for KISS on 1982, 30 years ago. And while Crue have since become hard rock icons in their own right, they are still the same KISS fans as back then. In a joint conversation with RS, Crue drummer Tommy Lee turned to KISS drummer Eric Singer and asked, "Are you guys gonna play 'Firehouse'?'" When Singer responded yeah 'cause Simmons was gonna blow fire, Lee's inner child started air drumming. "I [expletive] love that song," he said, tapping his hands excitedly.

The admiration and respect are mutual. "I'm a big Motley Crue fan," Singer said. "I've always been a fan of Tommy's and a fan of the band, so I think it's really cool."

A double bill of KISS and Motley Cr?e promises to be over the top, "Elvis on steroids," it was called in the press conference. "I want people to leave and go, 'so this is what rock & roll is,'" Stanley said. "It?s dangerous, it?s loose, it?s not perfect. So whatever pop artist you see dancing around on a stage lip synching, that?s a con game and that?s not a live concert. If you want karaoke, go to a karaoke bar."

Simmons fired shots at pop singers in the press conference, saying, "We're sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes in back of them. No fake [expletive]. Leave that to the Rhianna, Smhianna and anyone who ends their name with an 'A.'"

Crue's Nikki Sixx didn't disagree, but took the more positive route, hoping it inspires young fans to see two bands who've persevered in both up and down times. "What I would like to see people take away from it is that if you actually practice your instrument and practice writing songs and put a hundred percent into your show and every aspect of it, from your clothes to your lyrics, if your singers sing, then this is what happens -- you have a long career and you get to go out and do the real deal," he told us. "It?s real rock & roll."

Lee suggested those youngsters seeing both bands for the first time will be speechless. "They're gonna be tripping, for somebody who hasn't seen either band," he said. "They're gonna be walking out of there flipped out. I would."

It was the always quotable Simmons though who summed up what people can expect from a night with Motley Crue and KISS. "Come out, we?ll blow [expletive] up, go home and [expletive] your girlfriend, that?s it," he said.? That's exactly what we'd hope for.

Picking a preschool that fits your child's needs | Education News

Early education ? Experts offer tips on finding the right program for your child.

Want your toddler to study modern dance? There?s a preschool for that. How about learn Spanish, or celebrate the Jewish High Holy days? There are preschools for those, too.

Utah parents have a dizzying array of options for early childhood education, but what criteria should they use to choose?

?It will certainly vary depending on the needs of the family and what they are looking to achieve,? said Janis Dubno, early childhood education policy analyst for Voices for Utah Children.

A high-quality preschool should offer several key components, whatever its curriculum may be, said Dubno, including ongoing training for teachers, strong support from its administration, a teacher-to-student ratio of less than 1:10, and fewer than 20 students in a class. Schools also should have a research-based curriculum that prepares children for kindergarten, and encourage family involvement.

Dubno recommends parents visit schools they are considering, and compare curricula and program requirements before making a decision.

Accreditation or a state license also can be a good indicator, said Byran Korth, assistant professor of early childhood education at Brigham Young University. He recommends programs that have been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
