, today at 7:59 amDog Writer's Association of America (DWAA) Annual Awards Dinner and Banquet is one of many swanky events just before or after the Westminster Dog Show in New York City, held at the Affinia Hotel. Well over a hundred people who write and broadcast about dogs, and are members of DWAA, give awards to the best of their own - for excellence in writing and broadcasting about dogs, as well as awards for illustration and photography.
The Dog Writers Association was born on February 13th, 1935, in the Westminster Kennel Club's meeting room in the old Madison Square Garden at Eighth Avenue and Fiftieth Street. Thirty writers, editors and publishers were invited, but all that survives of the first meeting is a crumbling, yellow sheet of note paper reading, "DUES PAID AT FIRST MEETING" followed by the names of eight people. ?Since those humble beginnings, thousands have joined, from individuals who write for a breed specific publication, like the Corgi Crier to the great Roger Caras, who worked for ABC-TV and was later CEO of the ASPCA.
I have been a member for nearly 20 years now, and I'm proud of that membership. Here are some images form the 2013 banquet.
