Kim Soane, Bobbi Brown's 'Left-Hand Woman,' Reveals The 5 Things You Need In Your Makeup Bag

 • On finding the perfect foundation: "The trick is yellow. We call it skin-tone correct, but you want to make sure that your foundation has a little bit of yellow in it. A lot of women will say 'I have pink undertones' but you may need a little bit of yellow in the foundation to cut out the pink."

 • On how much time we should allow: "it shouldn't take more than five to ten minutes to do your everyday look...honestly three to five minutes and it comes down to knowing what your basics and your essentials are."

 • On the five essentials every woman should have: "You need your moisturizer. You need eye cream...You also need a face cream, something with a sunscreen in it, whether it's your tinted mositurizer, a foundation, something's gotta have an SPF...under-eye concealer, because a lot of times when you're tired or not feeling as fresh, or your makeup doesn't feel right or you're having a bad beauty day, you want to use under-eye concealer (Bobbi in fact calls it "The secret to the universe"). [You also need] your blush. Blush is probably Bobbi's second favorite product, and finding that color that when you pinch your cheeks, you get that natural flush or when you've just exercised and you come in from the outdoors, that is the sort of color or warmth you want on your cheek. Finding that color in a blush whether or not it's a cream or a powder, that is absolutley one of your essentials...and for a lot of women it's either mascara and, or eyebrows. So a couple coats of mascara and you really see that difference...those would be absolute minimal essentials" -- you got that? Eye-cream, moisturizer, concealer, a blush (cream or powder), and something for our eyes, either brows or lashes (or both, why not!).

 • On the best way to make your eyes pop: "It's interesting watching Bobbi over the years do so much makeup, a lot of the times when we're doing makeup it's isn't always about eye shadow colors, but the eyeliner. So if you have to pick definitely go with eyeliner because that gives definition and shape to the eye and the eye shadow is what you see after."

 • On the best eye shadow based on eye color: "[For brown eyes] anything from a soft taupe to a soft grey, depending also on the skin tone. But Bobbi loves brown on brown eyes, or taupe on brown. For instance with green eyes, a lot of women come to the counter saying 'Oh I'm supposed to wear purple shadow' but you have to be careful with that because what do you see first, the purple shadow -- you don't see the green of their eye. So Bobbi loves, on green or hazel eyes, soft taupe, cool grey tones look beautiful -- we have a beautiful color called "Heather" which is a mix between a purple and a grey for green eyes. On blue eyes she loves warm tones and loves blue on blue. So greys, silvers, sparkly, platinum colors. So blue on blue, green on green, brown on brown, then it makes the whole eye pop."

 • On contouring: "Don't do it. Walk away from the contouring. Contouring looks awesome in magazines, you can pull it off on runway, but in real life it just looks like muddy makeup on the face. The Bobbi way of contouring is with two products -- one is with your bronzer and the other is with your blush. You apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face. So that's the forehead, nose, chin and through the cheek area. Bobbi's number one tip for applying blush is that you smile and apply it on the height of the cheek. And if you apply blush when you smile, on the apple of your cheek and bring it back towards the top of your ear and down a little, it looks lifted and higher. There are subtle natural ways to contour for real women." Noted.

 • On getting rid of dark circles: "For extreme under eye darkness there are correctors and concealers. Correctors are either pink or peach colored and what that does is it neutralizes the under eye. And then add your concealer. There are products made especially for under eye and the reason you want to use products that are only made for under eye is because they are creamier. The under eye skin is so much thinner and shows fine lines faster, so to use a corrector and concealer you don't need to blend the two, but the trick is, you want to make sure your under eye concealer is one shade lighter than your foundations or the rest of your face. That helps to lift and brighten but won't be too obvious or create that raccon look."

 • On taking off your makeup: "Never rub your eye area, just gently press and tap. When you remove your eye makeup, just gently hold and press because the skin is so delicate and shows the wear and tear faster than the rest of our faces."

 • On making your makeup last all day: "Use long wear eye products -- there are products that have that 12 hour claim to them and they work, Bobbi's works, they hold for 12 hours -- you should never have to re-apply your eyeshadow or your eyeliner or your mascara after you've worked the full day and are going out at night. Carry your powder. You probably are going to have to carry a little blush, every TV shoot we do, every fashion show we do we are touching up blush. And blush is something where after half an hour it fads out. To carry even a cream blush or a pot rouge and some gloss. A little bit of powder, blush, gloss."

 • On finding the right shade of red lipstick: "The best thing is to try it on," she said. "You want something that is going to be a contrast to your skin tone. If you find that you have a really warm skin tone and you want your lips to pop, try something cooler. And if you have a cooler skin tone then try something that's warm -- that contrast is what's going to pop. Blue undertone lipsticks, in general, are what make your teeth look whiter, so if you want your bright white smile then choose more of a cooler red, like a blue-red."

 • On making lipstick stick: "Lip pencils are an amazing tool. If your lipstick doesn't stay on, or you want more definition to your lips, try a pencil that's the color of your lip and then use that almost as your lip base. If you have a harder time, or for the holiday season with a red lip, get a red liner and that helps perfect the shape and helps it stay on. So apply lip liner over the whole lip, lipstick and then finish off with a liner."
