(AP) - Indian conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar now owns a majority stake in New York's Plaza Hotel, which is bought from Israeli real estate company El Ad US Holding Inc.

El Ad CEO Udi Erez said Wednesday that the transaction, valued at $575 million, closed on Monday.

The deal, announced in July, gives Sahara India Pariwar a 75 percent interest in the Plaza Hotel and adjacent retail space.

Kingdom Holding Co., headed by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, retains the remaining 25 percent stake in the property.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will continue to operate the hotel under a long-term agreement.

An email seeking comment from Sahara India Pariwar was not immediately returned.

The Plaza has a colorful past, having hosted guests such as Eleanor Roosevelt, The Beatles and Mark Twain.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A combination of anti-HIV drugs has been found to also reduce the risk of recurrent malaria by nearly half among HIV-positive children, according to researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health.

The combination of protease inhibitors lopinavir and ritonavir contributed to an overall reduction of 40 percent in the rate of malaria among a group of HIV-positive infants and children up to 6 years old in Uganda who were also being treated with anti-malarial drugs. This reduction was in comparison to malaria incidence among children receiving a drug treatment of one of a class of drugs called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs).

Protease inhibitors interfere with the reproduction of HIV by blocking the protease enzyme of HIV. The protease inhibitor combination used in the study did not appear to inhibit an initial bout of malaria--but reduce the chances of a recurrence of the disease following a successful treatment.

The researchers found that blood levels of anti-malarial drugs were higher in children who had received the protease inhibitors, which may help explain their effectiveness at preventing malaria's return.

"It's possible that these protease inhibitors prevent antimalarial drugs from breaking down or have some other additive effect against the malarial parasite," said Lynne Mofenson, M.D., chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Maternal AIDS Branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the NIH institute that funded the study. "Laboratory studies also suggest that protease inhibitors can block the malaria parasite outright. Finding out why this drug combination is effective is an area for further study."

Previous studies have shown that the lopinavir-ritonavir combination also is more effective for treating HIV-positive infants than widely used treatment regimens based on the medication nevirapine.

The NNRTI nevirapine is the first-line treatment for HIV recommended by the World Health Organization for children in developing countries. It is less expensive than the protease inhibitor combination and, unlike the protease inhibitors, does not need refrigeration. Compared to nevirapine, the liquid formulation of the protease inhibitor combination is also unpleasant tasting. However, recent changes in the protease inhibitor formulation may overcome these barriers to expanding its use in resource poor settings, Dr. Mofenson said.

"New formulations have been developed for the drug so that it can be sprinkled on food, tastes better, and doesn't need refrigeration," she said. "This may help where it is needed most."

First author Jane Achan, MMed, of Makerere University and the Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration, in Uganda, collaborated with colleagues in Uganda and at the University of California, San Francisco.

Their findings appear in the New England Journal of Medicine.

More than 170 HIV-positive infants and children participated in the study. They received either an NNRTI (nevirapine for children under age 3, efavirenz for children over age 3) or the protease inhibitor-based treatment. In addition, the children received insecticide-treated nets to keep mosquitoes away while they slept, vitamins, a clean source of water, and medication to prevent infection with the malaria parasite, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Even with these measures, the researchers found that the children's risk of developing malaria in the first six months of their anti HIV treatment was greater than 40 percent. Although the risk was slightly higher in the nevirapine-treated group, the difference was not significant statistically.

However, of the children who developed malaria and were successfully treated for it during the study, 41 percent of those taking an NNRTI developed another case of malaria within 28 days of clearing their system of the parasite the first time. In contrast, only 14 percent of those on the combination lopinavir-ritonavir treatment developed another case of malaria within this time period.

When comparing the two groups over a 63-day period, the researchers found that 54 percent of the NNRTI group had a recurrence of malaria, compared with 28 percent of the group taking the lopinavir-ritonavir treatment.

In addition, tests conducted one week after the start of malaria treatment showed that blood levels of an anti-malaria drug were higher among children receiving the protease inhibitor combination than among their counterparts taking the nevirapine-based treatment.

"The finding that this protease inhibitor combination not only appears more effective at treating HIV than NNRTIs, but also protects against malaria recurrence, merits its consideration for children living in areas where malaria is rampant," Dr. Mofenson said.

The sharp, upward momentum in prices for agricultural land has not been lost on some of the savvier investors out there. Pension funds like it, according to this story:

There are two times during the year (fall and spring) that I like to take an inventory of eight all-important areas of your life and do what I call ?The 8 F?s of FITNESS.?

Ultimately anytime is a good time to do ?The 8 F?s.? Fitness isn?t just about physical health.? Fitness is about holistic health. That is body, mind, and spirit. Take out a pen and paper and write down three things you can do to improve these critical areas.

Faith ? What areas can you do better in your faith? Start with a daily devotional. Not a person of faith? Do this for me anyway. Stop, and in the quiet of your heart ask to become a person of faith. Step out and don?t make yourself the end all be all authority for you. Search for yourself, visit a local church and be open.

Family ? Start a game or movie night with the family, go out on a date minimum once per month. Take your spouse out to lunch or show up at your child?s school for lunch. Start camping with the family.

Fitness ? Do one thing this year to be healthier. Make a better bad choice, pass on the burger and get a fried chicken sandwich. You?ll save 300 calories, and it?s a start. Go for a walk twice a week. Join a gym. I know a great one.

Finances ? Do you spend what you make or more? Put a little away, and forego instant gratification.

Friends ? Do you have friends who build you up or tear you down? Jim Rohn, motivational speaker, states, ?You are the the average of the five people you spend the most time with.? How are you doing in that arena of your life? It sounds harsh, but ?You can?t fly with eagles when you hangout with turkeys.?

Function ? Work and Career. How much do you love your job? Be thankful you have work right now, but if you can?t stand your job, make an exit strategy to do something you are really passionate about. Go back to night or online school to make this happen.

Fun ? You must have an element of adventure or fun in your life. Take up a team sport, join a club, golf, craft, or do whatever it is you love.

Future Legacy ? What will you be remembered for? What family traditions and values are you instilling in your kids and those around you? What will the dash between the years on your headstone stand for? Your legacy starts now, not after you leave this earth.

Ancient, Saturn-like ring systems may have acted as assembly lines for natural satellites

"If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch," as Carl Sagan once said, "you must first invent the universe." And if you wish to make a moon from scratch, according to new research, you must first create planets with rings (after inventing the universe, of course).

Earth?s moon may have emerged from a long-vanished ring system, much like the rings still encircling Saturn ? and the same goes for many of the satellites orbiting the other planets. The bulk of the solar system?s regular satellites?those moons that stick close to their planets in roughly equatorial orbits?formed this way, rather than taking shape simultaneously with the planets as a direct result of planet formation, French astrophysicists have concluded. The researchers reported their findings in the November 30 issue of Science.

?It?s fundamentally the same process that gave birth to the moon and to the satellites of the giant planets, and that?s the spreading of rings,? says astrophysicist Aur?lien Crida of the University of Nice?Sophia Antipolis and the Observatory of C?te d?Azur in France, who co-authored the study with S?bastien Charnoz of the University of Paris?Diderot.

Through theoretical modeling, the researchers found that the moon-formation action begins at the edge of a planetary ring, where a satellite can take shape without being shredded by the gravitational pull of the planet. There, moonlets coagulate from the ring material before migrating outward. As the ring system spits out moonlet after moonlet, the small objects merge to form larger moons, which may merge in turn as they spiral outward from the planet.

The idea of a moonlet assembly line differs from the standard conception of satellite birth, in which moons condense along with their host planet from a swirling cloud of dust and gas, much like the planets themselves are thought to have taken shape around the nascent sun. The solar-system-in-miniature concept seems to work well for the largest moons, such as Jupiter?s four so-called Galilean satellites, but the retinue of smaller moons circling the other giant planets ?have so far been considered a by-product,? Crida says.

The new hypothesis seems to explain a key commonality among the regular satellites of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune ? namely, that moons farther from their respective planets tend to have larger masses than their closer-in neighbors. Like a snowball rolling downhill, the coalescing moons would grow larger and larger as they drift farther from the planet and its rings, undergoing progressively more mergers along the way. The end result is a neatly ordered satellite system, with small moons on the inside built from few moonlets and large moons farther out built from numerous moonlets.

?I think the best thing about this work is that they explain this link between the mass of the moon and the orbital distance, which was known before but not understood,? says planetary scientist David Nesvorny of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., who did not contribute to the new research. ?If you had asked me a few years ago, I would think of our moon?s formation and the formation of the satellites of the outer planets differently,? he adds. ?This theory puts things on common ground.?

Planetary scientists generally accept that a giant impact into the newly formed Earth ejected a huge cloud of material that became the moon. In Crida and Charnoz?s conception, that ejecta first flattened into a ring around the planet, which then spread out and coagulated into the moon. But unlike Saturn?s ring, which would have leaked out numerous moonlets to form several moons, Earth?s relatively massive ring would have poured all its material into one large satellite before dissipating. ?It spreads very fast,? Crida says of Earth?s hypothesized ring. ?And if it spreads fast, only one moon has time to form.?

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of President Mohamed Mursi rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a fifth day on Tuesday, stepping up calls to scrap a decree they say threatens Egypt with a new era of autocracy.

The protest called by leftist, liberal and socialist groups marks an escalation of the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June and exposes the deep divide between newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

The crowd is expected to grow in the late afternoon but hundreds were already in the square after many camped overnight. Police fired tear gas and organizers urged demonstrators not to clash with Interior Ministry security forces.

One person - a Muslim Brotherhood activist - has been killed and hundreds more injured in violence set off by a move that has also triggered a rebellion by judges and battered confidence in an economy struggling to recover from two years of turmoil.

Mursi's opponents have accused him of behaving like a modern-day pharaoh. The United States, a big benefactor to Egypt's military, has voiced its concerns, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

The protest will test the extent to which Egypt's non-Islamist opposition can rally support. The Islamists have consistently beaten more secular parties at the ballot box in elections held since Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, 2011.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," said Ahmed Husseini, 32, who was speaking early on Tuesday in Tahrir Square.

Activists have been camped out in Tahrir Square, scene of the historic uprising against Mubarak, since Friday, blocking it to traffic and clashing intermittently with riot police in nearby streets.

The decree issued by Mursi on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament expected in the first half of 2013.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said it gives Mursi more power than the military junta from which he assumed power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted judges had challenged the decree in remarks to Austria's Die Presse, adding: "But I have also noted that Mursi wants to resolve the problem in a dialogue. I will encourage him to continue to do so."

AVOIDING CONFRONTATION

In a bid to ease tensions with judges outraged at the step, Mursi has assured the country's highest judicial authority that elements of the decree giving his decisions immunity would apply only to matters of "sovereign" importance. Though that should limit it to issues such as a declaration of war, experts said there was room for a broader interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled a mass protest it had called in Cairo for Tuesday in support of a decree that has also won the backing of more hardline Islamist groups.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

Its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a raft of court cases from plaintiffs who claim it was formed illegally.

The new system of government to be laid out in the constitution is one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

"The president of the republic must put his delusions to one side and undertake the only step capable of defusing the crisis: cancelling the despotic declaration," liberal commentator and activist Amr Hamzawy wrote in his column in al-Watan newspaper.

"We asked for the cancellation of the decree and that did not happen," said Mona Amer, spokeswoman for the opposition movement Popular Current, part of a coalition of parties that are joining forces to challenge the Mursi decree.

Mursi issued the decree a day after his administration won international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

MEETING HALF WAY

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood had a major say in both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, a Mubarak hold over, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

But in a sign that other judges were willing to meet Mursi half way, the Supreme Judicial Council, the nation's highest judicial body, proposed Mursi limit the scope of decisions that would be immune from judicial review to "sovereign matters", language the presidential spokesman said Mursi backed.

"The president said he had the utmost respect for the judicial authority and its members," spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters in announcing the agreement on Monday.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Before the president's announcement, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy said protests would continue until the decree was scrapped and said Tahrir would be a model of an "Egypt that will not accept a new dictator because it brought down the old one".

Mursi has repeatedly stated the decree will only stay in place until a new parliament is elected - something that can only happen once the constitution is written and passed in a popular referendum.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, his rivals oppose Mursi's methods.
