The kite runner

The novel "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini has many controversies between the relationships of two friends Amir and Hassan. Like any two friends they will always have their ups and downs to where maybe someday may not longer be friends and Amir and Hassan are both faced with these troubles through the years they knew each other.

Amir and Hassan grew up together as best friends or as what Hassan thought that they were best friends. Baba, Amir's father was never much of a father figure to Amir because of his ways. Growing up together Amir, the son of a wealthy well known man in Kabul he made friends with one of his servants named Hassan. Through the book Amir and Hassan's relationship seems to be one sided and not a very strong relationship compared to what you see in today's time. Amir and Hassan when little seemed as the best of friends they carved their names in pomegranate tree as the "sultans of Kabul" (Page 27). Amir is looked down upon by his father because he thinks that he is not manly enough and Amir also thinks secretly that his father looks down upon him for the death of his mother during child birth.

Hassan is not just a servant of Amir's family but also I kite runner for Amir and one of the best kite runners in Kabul as said in the book (Page 68). The biggest quilt that Amir has that has ruined the relationship between Hassan and Amir is the secret that he has kept from everybody when he seen the rape of Hassan by Assef and told no one and just hoped that someone would wake up to see what he had seen. Assef you could say was jealous of Amir and his kite runner Hassan and one afternoon Amir won a local kite tournament and Baba his father gave all the praise to Hassan. After the tournament Hassan runs into Assef and has Amir's kite and Assef wants to take it and he would not give it up so for revenge led up to the rape of Hassan (Page 86). After this the friendship of Hassan and Amir were distanced because Amir could not deal with the thoughts of it happening and all the jealousy that he had built up over several years from his father.

Through the novel Amir tested Hassan to just show Hassan that he is a lower person than himself. Because this was the whole underlying meaning behind the problem of their friendship because Amir always wanted to show that he was the over powering person not just a servant that he was so much better of a person and that Hassan was on a lower scale. The worst thing that Amir did to Hassan to prove to him or to humiliate him was at their school when Amir said "Let's see, Imbecile ' it means smart, intelligent. I'll use it in a sentence for you. 'When it comes to words, Hassan is an imbecile (Page 29).

Five years down the road after Amir and Hassan adventures and horrific past Amir and Baba escape from Peshawar, Pakistan and then to Fremont, California, USA, where Amir and Baba, who lived in luxury in an expensive mansion in Afghanistan, settle in a run-down apartment and Baba begins work at a gas station (Page 196). When Baba and Amir leave to the US they keep in touch with Rahim Khan. Not long after they leave they receive a phone call from him asking them to return back to Kabul because he is dying of an illness. When they return from the US Amir finds out that Hassan has become married to a women named Farzana, and a son, named Sohrab, and had returned to Baba's house as a caretaker at Rahim Khan's request with Hassan had grew up there being a servant for them.

For every friendship there is always a past that may sometime bring the friendship apart to where it is distant. This novel shows in an earlier years how friendships are hard and there are all sorts of betrayals beyond friendships making relationships not last to their full extent as what had happen to where Amir had betrayed Hassan in his raping by not telling or explaining to anyone what had happened and then the guilt was a big issue for Amir and not long after the relationship had came falling down.
